Is the protein RDA an optimal amount or should it be viewed as a minimum amount?

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) is a minimal amount to prevent deficiency, rather than the optimal amount to support health, notes Dr Donald Layman. In fact, he observes that the optimal amount for protein intake is almost twice the RDA, in the range of 1.2-1.8 grams per kilogram of bodyweight.
