Arne Vernon Astrup, MD, DSc

University of Copenhagan

Dr. Arne Astrup heads the Department of Human Nutrition at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, where he was awarded the Chair in Nutrition in1990. He is Director of the Danish Nordea Foundation OPUS Research Centre 2009-13.

Dr. Astrup attained his medical degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1981 and a Doctorate in Medical Science at the University of Copenhagen in 1986. His main areas of interest include physiology and pathophysiology of energy and substrate metabolism, with a special emphasis on the etiology and treatment of obesity. Major research collaborations include participation in the EU multicenter studies: EUROSTARCH, CARMEN, NUGENOB, DIABESITY, DIOGENES, EMOB, and HEALTHGRAIN.

He was President of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO) from 2006-2009, and is currently Chairman of IASO (2009-) and Editor-in-Chief of the IASO journal Obesity Reviews. Dr. Astrup is also a member of the editorial boards of The International Journal of Obesity and The Journal of the Danish Medical Association.

Dr. Astrup has published over 270 original research papers, many in journals such as The Lancet, The British Medical Journal, and The Journal of Clinical Investigation and has contributed to more than 700 other scientific publications, including textbook chapters, scientific abstracts, reviews, and letters.

Dr. Astrup was awarded Knight of the Order of Dannebrog in 1999. His academic honours include Servier's Award for Outstanding Obesity Research in 1990; the IASO André Mayer Award in1994; the Danone Chair in Nutrition in 2002 at the University of Antwerp; Communication Prize 2007 at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen; the International Association of Business Communicators’ EME Excel Merit Award for Communication Leadership, 2009; and the Innovations Award 2010 at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
