Sheila M. Innis, Ph.D.

Dr. Sheila Innis is a Professor in the Department of Paediatrics, and Director of the Nutrition Research Program, Child and Family Research Institute, as well as a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Distinguished Scholar in the Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. Dr. Innis has been working in the field of nutrition for more than 25 years and has served on numerous regulatory and policy-making expert panels, including the National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine Panel on Dietary Recommended Intakes, and the Life Sciences Research Office expert panel on minimum and maximum nutrient intake levels for term and preterm infants.

She currently sits on the Trans Fat Task Force which is mandated to make recommendations to Health Canada concerning the removal of industrial trans fats from the Canadian food supply, and recently participated in the International Symposium on Trans Fatty Acids in Human Health in Denmark. Dr. Innis is also chair of the B.C. Children’s and Women’s Hospital Nutrition Committee and co-chair of the Special Care Nursery Nutrition Committee. She has contributed over 180 articles to peer-reviewed publications and is a sought-after speaker worldwide for her expertise on dietary fatty acids and health.
