Symposium Speaker
Benoît Lamarche, Ph.D.

Director, Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods Institute
Université Laval

Dr. Benoît Lamarche is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Food and Nutrition Sciences at Université Laval. His main area of interest is nutrition and functional food and their impact on cardiovascular health. His research, which is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, is also geared towards understanding the fundamental mechanisms by which lipases control the metabolism of serum lipids in humans. Since 2001, he has held a Canada Research Chair in Nutrition, Functional Food and Cardiovascular Health. Over the last few years, Dr. Lamarche has conducted research on the impact of various foods and their components on cardiovascular risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome. This research has led to his collaboration with such world leaders in the field of nutrition and cardiovascular disease as David Jenkins (University of Toronto), Peter Jones (McGill University), and Alice Lichtenstein (Tufts University). Together, their work has led to the finding that high levels of dietary trans fatty acids are associated with a proliferation of small, dense LDL particles, a major contributor to cardiovascular risk. Dr. Lamarche has published in numerous peer-reviewed nutrition journals. Currently, he and his team are studying the role of milk and dairy products in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Their epidemiologic data suggests that increased consumption of dairy products is associated with a 25 to 30% reduction in cardiovascular risk.

Dr. Lamarche has been recognized by the American Heart Association (Honorary Fellow, 2003), the Canadian Society of Cardiology (Young Investigator Award, 2001), the Lipidology Club of Quebec (Founders Prize, 1999) and the Canadian Lipoprotein Conference (Pfizer Young Investigator Award, 1999).
