Antibiotics
Are there antibiotics in milk? Dairy regulations in Canada are very clear. Milk undergoes strict testing to ensure its high quality, including the absence of antibiotic residue.
Farmers place a high emphasis on the safety and health of their cows. Antibiotics are administered only in case of illness and medication is prescribed by a veterinarian to preserve the health and well-being of the animals.
When a cow is treated with antibiotics, however, her milk is not permitted in the milk supply pool and is discarded. The cow is milked separately from the herd, its milk is eliminated until her milk tests clear for antibiotic residue. If any trace of antibiotics is found, the milk is discarded. Very strict penalties apply if regulations are not met.
